My partially purple hair is a frequent conversation starter at shows and while running errands. At least half the time my chatting buddy brings up the frustrations they had in maintaining their own attempt at alternatively colored hair (or simply assumes their hair can’t do it at all). So, being the love to help type, I gladly share my own experiences, the name of my colorist, and the products that I use. This particular conversation has happened so much lately that I figure it makes a sort of sense to also have it on the interwebs with you. 🙂
I’ve had purple in my hair off and on for a few years and have used products from grocery stores, beauty stores, and salons. My experience is in no way comprehensive and I do not consider myself an expert of any kind, but from what I can tell my current record of 9 months between dye jobs is quite respectable (some pieces were still vibrant and others had faded to pale purple). The key to all of these shampoos and conditioners is that they are sulfate-free. It really does make a huge difference in how long hair color lasts and you can find one to fit any budget. So no more cleaning your hair with sulfates! Got it? 😉 (FYI, I am in no way affiliated with any of the companies below. I’m just a fan and customer.)

- Renpure Argan Oil Luxurious Shampoo and Conditioner
This cleanser is the clear winner and my favorite! 
To me it is well worth the price since it at least doubles (possibly triples) the time between dye jobs for me. I never see rivers of purple in the shower or spots on the shower walls, even the first time I wash. I also love that it’s a handy, dandy, time-saving 2-in-1. My colorist suggested this one from her salon and it’s proof that she really knows her stuff.
This is the best mid-priced option I’ve found. Although more purple washes out than with option #1, it’s minimal (only faint purple spots on the shower walls for evidence). It also smells super yummy! You can usually find this pair at Sephora and other similar stores.
This is the most affordable option of the three and it does a very good job. I do see more evidence of the color washing out than with the other two and I do notice the color fading faster, but it is still way better than most shampoos. I found this one at my grocery store, and it was the most affordable of the sulfate-free choices.
Additional Tips
- Use a sulfate-free heat protectant (mine is also by Kerastase) before you blow dry, curl, or straighten your hair.
- If you have shoulder length or longer hair, put your hair up with a clip to keep it out of your soap, body wash, etc., unless those are sulfate-free too.
- Wash with cool water, or so I’ve heard. I admit that I don’t do this myself. I get cold easily and just can’t stand it unless it’s summer. The good news is I can get away with it because of all the rest.
